Come build the backend and data pipeline for our analysis platform. Open to anyone interested in Clojure/FP!

Role overview

Polecat analyses the media impact of big organisations to show them how different topics affect their reputation. This is a fast growing market as more and more organisations start to take Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) concerns seriously.

We want to grow the backend team working on our SaaS products. We ingest tens of millions of documents per day into our stream processing pipeline, using our scoring algorithms and machine learning models to transform public internet mentions of company into web-based dashboards, reports, data exploration tools and alerts informing customers about how they are being represented and perceived.

Our code is primarily Clojure, with some supporting Python applications. However, we are also open to candidates without Clojure experience if they have an interest in functional programming and meet the other requirements.

If you want to learn Clojure or make the leap into full-time Clojure development, this could be the role for you!

Our tech stack also includes:

  • Datomic
  • GraphQL
  • Elasticsearch
  • Kafka
  • Docker/Kubernetes

We have a culture of listening to engineers and taking time to produce great quality code. We don't want to be just a feature factory that racks up the technical debt; we believe that quality engineering is the foundation of a successful product. We also believe strongly in Building the Right Thing, and our engineers actively participate in the decision-making process.

Polecat is a fully remote company and accepting applications from anywhere within the UK and Poland. We do regular lunches and other social events in the Bristol area.

Requirements

Specific skills and experience required:

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience of building software, in a team, that is being used by real customers.
  • Degree-level capability in a maths/science/computing subject or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with modern functional or object-oriented programming languages
  • Knowledge of software best practices and enthusiasm for them.
  • Fluent written and spoken English.

Our ideal candidate would be someone with a history of close collaboration with DevOps specialists, data scientists and QA, with the ability to do cross-team tasks as required.

In a typical week, you might:

  • Pick up a feature story and implement it in Clojure or Python.
  • Jump on a call with the rest of the team to scope out new ideas.
  • Investigate a new technology or approach we could adopt.
  • Deploy your changes into cloud dev and stage environments, and work with QA to test them.
  • Identify a pain point and propose or implement improvements.
  • Review merge requests from other team members.

You’re going to love this job if you:

  • Thrive on problem solving in a fast-paced commercial environment.
  • Like the flexibility and freedom of a start-up business culture.
  • Enjoy learning new technologies and expanding your comfort zone.

Benefits

  • Fully remote working from within the UK or Poland. Occasional meetups in Bristol, UK.
  • Annual holidays (25 days – increases with tenure).
  • Bank holidays (in addition to annual holiday noted above).
  • Enhanced sick time.
  • Pension plan scheme with employer match.
  • Great team environment – we’re here to help provide everything you need to be successful!
