The Role

Data is at the heart of what we do.

Depop is looking for a Senior BI Engineer to join our growing cross-functional BI team. Our platform receives tens of thousands of requests every second; weโ€™re looking to cut through the noise, leverage this vast data, and find value.

At Depop we treat data as one of our digital products, and the BI team serves as the gatekeeper between our data stack and our business stakeholders. The BI team is a cross-functional unit that includes a technical product manager, a team of engineers and several data analysts. You will help manage our growing information needs and support analysis of increasingly complex business problems by:

  • Ensuring that our data is fit-for-purpose and usable by the business, including writing and testing ETLs and other aggregations to present data in an efficient and accessible format
  • Building and promoting self-service tools and data best practices that will be used across the organisation, including taking ownership of our BI and reporting tools, in particular Looker.

You will work closely with business stakeholders from a wide variety of domains within Depop, as well as our Insights, MarTech and Data Engineering teams.

Weโ€™re building scalable and robust systems to harvest, process and analyse the vast data within our tech ecosystem. With an increasing demand to service other areas of the business, and ultimately our 25 million users, youโ€™ll be at the forefront of pioneering Data-as-a-Service.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the overall delivery of the entire BI/ETL pipeline, including ETL development and delivery, resource scheduling and QA.
  • Design, build and maintain data sets and table structures, and the ETL processes required to populate them, in order to enable key business processes and the design and development of analytics visualisations.
  • Build robust solutions to support 3rd party data integrations.
  • Design and promote monitoring and alerting solutions to ensure the highest levels of data integrity.
  • Proactively identify and implement ways to improve data processes and warehousing, navigating complex challenges as our data grows and becomes an integral piece of our business and product operations.
  • Manage the health and stability of our BI analytics tools and work towards promoting best practices to allow for their scalable growth.
  • Promote company-wide best practices around accessing & transforming data and using our BI and reporting tools by writing clear documentation, tutorials and hosting training sessions.
  • Work closely with BI Analysts and business stakeholders to gather requirements for data projects and efficiently translate into technical specifications for the engineering functions.
  • Support and coordinate other large-scale BI projects within Depop.

Requirements:

Must-haves:

  • Strong Proficiency in SQL including a solid understanding of how to optimise query performance.
  • Advanced knowledge in a high-level programming language commonly used in ETL pipelines, such as Python or Scala.
  • Experience creating resilient ETL pipelines with workflow management tools such as Airflow or Luigi.
  • Working knowledge around data modeling best practices.
  • In-depth knowledge of AWS data solutions such as Redshift, S3, and Athena.
  • Familiarity with best-in-class BI and reporting tools like Looker, Chartio or Tableau.
  • Ability to display complex quantitative data in a simple, intuitive format and to present findings in a clear and concise manner.
  • Collaborative and humble team player with an ability to work with cross-functional teams, including technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and able to respond to change or uncertainty with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn.
  • A strong sense of ownership and highly organised nature.
  • BA/BS in a technical field such as Computer Science, Engineering, or Statistics, preferred.

Bonus points for:

  • Proven experience building data pipelines with Airflow.
  • Previous experience in Looker implementation and familiarity with LookML.
  • Experience working on a marketplace, in a mobile first environment or on social products.

Depop is where the world's creatives come to buy, sell and discover the most inspiring and unique things. Depop was founded by co-founder of PIG magazine and RETROSUPERFUTURE sunglasses, Simon Beckerman. Originally a social network where PIGโ€™s readers could buy items featured in the magazine. After realizing that Depop needed a selling function, Simon re-envisioned the app as a global marketplace โ€” a mobile space where you can see what your friends and the people youโ€™re inspired by are liking, buying, and selling. In turn, your friends and creative influencers all over the world can see the things you like, buy, and sell, and are inspired by you. This ecosystem has supported Depop becoming a global conduit of connection, not only in m-commerce, but culture, design, and creative communities around the world.
