Role overview

Who we are

Wayfair believes everyone should live in a home they love. Through technology and innovation, Wayfair makes it possible for shoppers to quickly and easily find exactly what they want from a selection of more than 18 million items across home furnishings, decor, home improvement, housewares, and more. Committed to delighting its customers every step of the way, Wayfair is reinventing the way people shop for their homes – from product discovery to final delivery.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a passionate and experienced Senior Software Engineer to join our Catalog Foundations Expansion Engineering team who would work on solving complex problems and building highly scalable applications. Your impact will drive efforts to tackle some of the most challenging problems we face as we continue to create a best-in-class shopping experience for our customers.

As a team member of the Catalog Foundations Expansion Group, you will have the option to work with one of our great teams below.

The Merchandising Workflows Team’s mission is to provide reliable, secure & scalable solutions that improve merchandising. We develop tools and services that allow our in-house and offshore teams to grow the Wayfair product catalog. By providing efficient and scalable workflow infrastructure, our operators can expand and protect our Brands. This enables our customers to find products through brands they come to know and love.

Findability Engineering helps maximize the revenue potential of our Catalog, and make sure that all products Wayfair has invested in are findable to the customer across all properties. To do that, we serve the comprehensive findability information to a spectrum of other engineering teams, build services that are able to detect abnormal and impactful drops from site, and empower fast root causing, and wherever possible, fix drops from site automatically.

Localization Engineering provides high-quality translation services for our Catalog data and other Wayfair tools at scale and will enable expansion into 10+ languages/geos in the long term. The Localization team is currently building scalable distributed platforms integrating it broadly in the company, investing into machine translation (MT) & learning approaches, and driving more efficient Localization operations. Today, the team performs localization and translation for product & rich media content, user interface static content, mobile apps, and ad-hoc requests

What you will do

  • As a senior member of one of the Merchandising Workflow & Services team, you will be working in a highly collaborative environment interacting closely with other software engineers & product managers to identify opportunities and implement solutions
  • Drive high impact architectural decisions and development, design, execution, and delivery following best coding practices
  • Obsessively focus on production readiness for the team including testing, monitoring, deployment, documentation and proactive troubleshooting
  • Provide high quality contributions to the code base, using best practices and a high degree of autonomy
  • Propose and own initiatives to completion while balancing various trade-offs including speed to delivery vs. ongoing maintainability
  • You will mentor other engineers to become proficient developers using best software development practices and processes

What you bring to the table

  • Experience in designing software systems based on Java/Python. Knowledge of and experience with C#, PHP and Javascript is an advantage
  • Understanding of resilience patterns and what it takes to build scalable systems in microservice architectures
  • Experience implementing both asynchronous message-based communication and synchronous ones such as RESTful APIs
  • Experience with large-scale distributed storage and database systems (SQL or NoSQL, e.g. MySQL, Cassandra)
  • Experienced in architecting and building large-scale event-driven systems across various projects
  • You have experience with automated testing
  • Knowledge of CI/CD processes for build and deployment of various applications
  • Great communication skills and the ability to support technical decision making with the team
  • Willingness to learn new technologies or languages
  • You have 5+ years of relevant work experience
  • Degree in Computer Science, technical discipline or equivalent work experience

What we will gladly offer

  • Highly competitive compensation packages (comprising of Base Salary, Bonuses and Equity)
  • Full ownership of your wellbeing with our unlimited “Personal Time Off”
  • Paid volunteering work
  • Contribution to private pension
  • Commuting schemes (car, bike, public transport)

  • Health & Sport memberships
  • Virtual child care
  • Global Wellbeing Program
  • Employee discount for Wayfair purchases
  • Corporate benefits

Location

Berlin is the capital and the largest city in Germany and well-known for its amazing festivals, exciting nightlife and a high quality of living. With a population of 3.7 million it is only second to London in the Europe Union, even with one-third of the city's area being composed of forests, parks, gardens, rivers, canals and lakes. Berlin is a city with a deep history, Bismarck, Marx, Einstein, JFK and Bowie, they’ve all shaped – and been shaped by – Berlin.

Often referred to as Europe's newest start-up capital, a new start-up is founded every 20 minutes. The startup industry is set to produce 100,000 new jobs by 2020.

It's no secret that Berlin is cheaper than many of its European counterparts. Office overheads and the price of living are cheaper, which makes it a very attractive place for tech entrepreneurs. Home to HelloFresh, Delivery Hero, and Soundcloud we expect many more household names to be coming out of Berlin in the next few years.

Did you know...

  • The average salary for a Software Engineer in Berlin is €58,765 per year
  • Berlin is the second most populous city in the EU
  • 250+
