We have almost 20 million registered users in 147 countries. In the UK, 1 in 3 Gen Z/Millennials are registered and in the US we have grown 300% over two years. As well as this, we are also the only European player to have recently entered the top 25 shopping apps by daily active users. 📈

We operate on three pillars:

Community: Our buyers, sellers and employees are inclusive, diverse and accessible. We are committed to empowering diversity within the fashion community. 💛

Entrepreneurship: We support our community and help them build their business with Depop. We thrive on supporting innovation by shaping an environment where creators, makers or hustlers can thrive. 🛍

Sustainability: Depop helps extend the life of garments and reduce waste, we care about the world and want to make a positive change within the fashion industry. ♻️

The Role

Depop is looking for a Lead Software Engineer to join and build an internal cross-functional team.

You'll lead a team of engineers through getting our platform and tools fully internationalised. With the ambition to empower our community to create a new, equitable sustainable fashion system across the globe, your team will be instrumental in setting up Depop to enter global markets and make international expansion scalable.

Initially, you’ll focus on a tech assessment of our current internationalisation efforts across the platform (mobile, web and backend) and setting standards and processes we want to follow in the future.

You’ll work closely with multiple cross-functional production teams across the business to educate and assist them in incorporating internationalisation in building future products and lead your team through making our existing product fully internationalised. All the while, prioritising your team's professional growth, championing best practice software development and reinforcing a healthy engineering culture.

You'll be working in a technically innovative environment, mentoring and coaching other engineers, and iterating and improving your teams work based on short feedback loops.

We write about technology, people and smart engineering - https://engineering.depop.com/

In next 12 months your responsibilities will include:

  • Working with a team consisting of both full-time and outsourced engineers.
  • Working across multiple platforms: backend (Scala, Python), mobile (Android, iOS) and web (React) while assessing current internationalisation processes.
  • Standardising localisation implementation and designing the internationalisation processes, systems and standards to follow across our platform.
  • Collaborating closely with multiple cross-functional teams and business stakeholders, making sure they include internationalisation into their day-to-day development process.
  • Helping your team design systems that can keep up with Depop’s growth.
  • Ensuring timely delivery of your teams’ projects, which will ultimately have a tangible impact on Depop’s success.
  • Supporting a strong engineering culture, orientated on technical innovation, and professional development.
  • Continuously improving your team’s ways of working (testing, deployment, working methodology) to maximise impact of the team.
  • Ensuring your team follows our engineering practices, by leading from the front.
  • Mentoring, coaching and helping engineers in your team to grow.

About you:

  • You care about successful end-to-end delivery of your team’s projects; from scoping and translating business requirements into plans, to design, implementation and maintenance, whilst coordinating with other teams (and engineers).
  • You proactively look for new ways to improve your team’s way of working (e.g. testing, deployment, delivery).
  • You cultivate a culture of ownership and responsibility in your team.
  • You are comfortable with managing multiple stakeholders and care about efficient communication and alignment of goals.

Depop is where the world's creatives come to buy, sell and discover the most inspiring and unique things. Depop was founded by co-founder of PIG magazine and RETROSUPERFUTURE sunglasses, Simon Beckerman. Originally a social network where PIG’s readers could buy items featured in the magazine. After realizing that Depop needed a selling function, Simon re-envisioned the app as a global marketplace — a mobile space where you can see what your friends and the people you’re inspired by are liking, buying, and selling. In turn, your friends and creative influencers all over the world can see the things you like, buy, and sell, and are inspired by you. This ecosystem has supported Depop becoming a global conduit of connection, not only in m-commerce, but culture, design, and creative communities around the world.
