  • Clojure

Wisedocs is a Canadian based, fast-growing, seed stage startup. Their team is made up of startup and scaleup veterans on a mission to make it easy and accessible for any company in the insurance, legal and medical space to understand medical documents quickly using AI.

As part of our company spotlight series we chatted with the team at Wisedocs about their company, team, culture and interview process.

Tell us more about Wisedocs, what do you do?

Wisedocs is an AI powered automation platform that processes and understands medical information in real time. We tackle the pain around manually sorting, understanding, and organizing messy unstructured medical documentation. To date we have saved our clients within the insurance industry, thousands of work hours and tens of thousands of dollars annually, using our digital solution.

What has been your biggest achievement over the last year?

We signed our two biggest Enterprise clients, and closed our Seed investment in 2021. Currently we process over 400,000 pages of medical documentation a month. We have grown 10-25% MoM since the beginning of Q3 and we have also expanded from Canada into the US with our most recent deals, channel partnerships, and new market segments.

What tech stack are you using and why?

  1. Back End - Django, DRF, Flask, Pytest, PostgreSQL, Redis, Celery, Clojure, Docker, Nginx, Terraform, Kubernetes, AWS
  2. Front End - JavaScript, Vue, Mocha, Webpack, Yarn
  3. Machine Learning - Python, PyTorch, Tensorflow, Ray, Ray Serve, SQL(Databases), AWS S3

What is the tech team currently working on?

ML and Data Science: The Data Science team are working on improving the model accuracy for indexing and next generation of OCR tailored for the medical domain. The ML Engineering team are working on building an MLOps platform which enables data scientists to quickly iterate over their experiments and deploy them to production as fast as possible.

How would you describe the culture at Wisedocs?

Wisedocs has a high-capability team with a deep startup mindset. Our founder is 10 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, and our team is scaleup veterans and medical claims industry experts. That means we value a very high degree of capability, and we’re always working to execute at the highest possible level.

Our passion for this space, and the role AI will play in completely transforming it, also means that we bring a real energy and a playful attitude to the workplace. Everyone is working hybrid or fully remote, but we have a great dynamic and there are lots of interactions between engineers, the engineering team and business leadership, and between our team and our customers.

What is the interview process like at Wisedocs?

ML Engineer Technical Interview. The technical interview for the ML Engineer is a two 1 hour session interview. The first session is for the interviewee to solve a simple problem in Python for us to gauge basic programming skills, followed by a design part where we give the candidate a design problem to assess the candidate's problem solving and basic design skills. The second session has the data scientist ask foundational ML questions and a ML engineer asking about the interviewees ML experience.

Finally, why should someone join your team?

If you’re experienced and an established leader, Wisedocs can provide you an excellent high-impact opportunity at the cusp of great scale. You’ll be receiving very-high-value equity because we’re only recently Seed funded, but the skill with which we’ve sold and positioned our product, as well our engineering headstart on the core AI problem we solve, is helping us scale revenue very quickly. We may well be at Series A by Summer and Series B by 2023.

If you’re a highly skilled engineer or professional, but you’ve not yet gained much experience as a manager or a team lead, Wisedocs can give you very-high-quality engineering challenges, both building a valuable product and working on challenging core AI features and implementations - all with an opportunity for rapid progression. There are less than 15 core engineers on our team so far, which means our advancement pace is going to be very fast compared to larger companies. This is a great place to make the transition from senior builder to senior management in just a few short years.

If this sounds intriguing make sure to check out Wisedocs' open roles and apply today!

Thanks for reading and happy coding,

Mihaela x
